In Nigeria, each of the 3 major GSM networks battle hard not just reach the top but remain there. But being dynamic and innovative seem the best strategy for achieving the goal while customers appreciation is the priority.

At time when GPRS service seemed impossible for Nigerian GSM users, a particular network broke the jinx and amazingly, it suddenly became possible with the rest of the networks. The same network took a bold step of introducing Giant promos forcing others to emulate the tradition of giving back to the people. This represents a 4% increase since the last reported period ended 31 December 2005. Excluding operations acquired in the previous financial period, year-on-year subscriber growth is 43%.

The MTN Group’s international operations recorded a total of 13 986 000 subscribers - an increase of 8% since December 2005, now accounting for 58% of the Group’s subscriber base (31 December 2005: 56%). MTN Nigeria remains the biggest of the international operations, with its closing base of 9 036000 being 65% of the Group’s subscribers outside of South Africa.

MTN Group President and Chief Executive Officer, Mr Phuthuma Nhleko, says: “These figures reflect the development of the MTN Group into an increasingly diversified entity. The anticipated conclusion of our partnership with Investcom will accelerate this trend. We remain focused on improving performance in every operation and our regionalised management structure will support our efforts.”

MTN South Africa reports 10 199 000 subscribers, with post-paid acquisitions remaining strong while the pre-paid base declined due to expected churn following the highly acquisitive final quarter of 2005. The strong growth in the final quarter of last year was mainly due a pre-paid product promotion which has since been terminated, and net connections have since normalised.

Prior year’s ARPUs for the first quarter included the impact of annual revenue and annual average subscriber growth. The most important impact of the changed reporting basis is the decline in South African and Nigerian ARPU numbers. In line with expectations, South Africa recorded pre-paid ARPU of R87 and post-paid ARPU of R493. Blended ARPU reduced to R155. In line with the Group’s expectations, MTN Nigeria recorded ARPU of US$19, a 5% quarter-on-quarter reduction. When compared to the nine months ended 31 December 2005, the quarter’s ARPU dropped by US$3 or 14%.

MTN’s operations in Iran are still on target to launch in August 2006, within its licence commitment.

Adapted from MTN Press Release
The 080 Palava
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14058146.post-1140163880130916132006-02-17T09:05:00.000+01:002006-02-17T09:11:20.140+01:00High tariff, poor servicesExtract from Telecom E-Review From Cyberschuul News

INDUSTRY WATCH

ANGRY WITH COST AND QUALITY,
NIGERIANS MAY BOYCOTT GSM SERVICES
FOR ONE DAY IN PROTEST

High tariff, poor services, inaccurate billing, and subscriber-care insensitivity on the part of GSM service providers constitute the grouse of mobile phone users in Nigeria and the Association of phone users has asked its member to boycott GSM services on Friday February 17, 2006 in protest. A similar one-day shut down of GSM services was carried out on September 19, 2003 when the only worries were high tariff, bad services and per minute billing. President of National Association of Telecommunications subscribers, NATCOM, Mr Deolu Ogunbanjo said the phenomenal growth in mobile services is not reflective of good service, subscriber-friendly products and reasonable tariff structure. Ogunbanjo’s call for the one-day boycott does not seem known to users outside his fellow activists apparently for reason of local press apathy.
The 080 Palava
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14058146.post-1140018244402441392006-02-15T16:28:00.000+01:002006-02-15T17:03:58.063+01:00The Vfone is finally hereLast year, I discussed about Vfone though it was yet to be released.

Posters of Vfone are found in virtually all call centres in Lagos; it is a new dawn in the Nation-wide fast growing phone-call business. I read, understood and agreed to the terms and conditions and finallyregistred as a member on 4th February, 2005. My first period(3 months as the policy applies) expired 4th May, 2005.

Meanwhile, I already reffered and assisted in registering many MTN subscribers including my family members, friends and neighbours as I perceived a lot from the service. After the expiration of my first period, all efforts at renewing my account proved unsuccessful. My refferals enjoyed and are still enjoying great benefits from the service.

I wrote emails, called customer care/help line on both 180 and 181 all to no avail.

Giving up? I already gave up but decided to send the very last email via the hekpdesk. Straight to mtn4u@mtnnigeria.net, my email went. No response.

One last call to 180. I was aked to hold on. My called got transfered to a more superior agent who assured me of rectification. His voice carried echoed some authority and for the first time after 9 months of complains, I was hopeful of a solution.

At about 5:30pm on friday, 10th of February 2006(after a year plus few days of my membership)I decided checking the account and there it was! Finally fixed. I already had N150 reward awaiting redemption.

I requested for redeem, and while typing this post, I got the SMS: N150 was successfully credited to your MTN Account from MTN4U.

I hieved a sigh of relief, 'At last!'

MTN4U is useful for all MTN prepaid subscribers irrespective of your recharge level. Speaking at the presentation of four more cars to winners in the Globacom Second Anniversary Promo in Lagos, Thursday, Utomi said that as a virgin brand, which has never existed anywhere before, but was built in Nigeria from the scratch and has now become a phenomenal brand, being a pride to niche marketing and inspiring vision He said this as Engr. Ndukwe affirmed that Globacom had surpassed expectations by coming from the rear to do very well in a dynamic industry. Commenting on the presentation of cars to Nigerians picked technologically at random Ndukwe who had been an observer at the early draws concluded that the process of picking the winners is transparent not prearranged, not discriminatory. With this latest presentation of four more cars to winners in the Lagos zone of the Draws, Globacom as at December 22, 2005 had given out 24 exotic brand new cars to Nigerians from diverse strata of the society. The latest recipients of the cars include Mrs. Taiwo Epe a caterer in Okokomaiko area of Lagos who received a Mercedes Benz E240 car, presented on behalf of Globacom by Engr. Ndukwe, Mrs. Jinadu Bolatilo, drove home in a Kia Sorento Jeep presented by Mrs. Ajoke Mohamed, wife of the former head of state, Gen. Murtala Muhamed, while Mrs. Flora Azuka collected the keys to a brand new Kia Rio from Barrister Grace Egbagbe of the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA). The other winner, Mr. Jimoh Ayuba collected the keys to a Honda City from Prof. Pat Utomi. This brings to eight the number of cars given to winners in Lagos, four in Enugu, four in Port Harcourt, four in Kano and four in Abuja Zones of the Promo draws Professor Utomi lauded Globacoms gesture in giving out the cars noting that Globacom has shown a social face. After the presentation of the cars, there was a fresh draw for a Volkswagen Polo and Honda City cars. Subscribers with numbers 08055808163 and 080551987060 emerged the lucky winners in the new draw. The winners all thanked Globacom for redeeming its pledge saying that this kind of integrity was rare. Mrs. Epe who won the Mercedes Benz had initially threatened to call the Economic and Financial crime Commission (EFCC ) when she was called and informed of her prize, but was full of praises for the company after receiving her prize.
Source: Gloworld.com News!
The 080 Palava
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14058146.post-1137747683480221682006-01-20T10:00:00.000+01:002006-01-21T17:49:49.113+01:00The MTN Self service(181) and other useful tipsCulled from MTN4U Brochure, January release! Those born 45 years ago are crossing the borderline of young men to becoming old men. But life has not been a swing. There are hisses and moans as people ruminate over missed opportunities.

No sector illustrates this better than the telecommunications industry where Nigeria did reasonably badly until only six years ago when some visionary came to breathe life into the communications sector courtesy of a great choice made by the President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo in the person of Engr Ernest Ndukwe who is the Executive Vice Chairman and the CEO of the Nigeria Communications Commission, NCC, the regulatory body. Before this time the industry was despicably down and attracted shame to the image of the country read more >>>
The 080 Palava
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14058146.post-1128081349369613732005-09-30T12:55:00.000+01:002005-09-30T12:55:49.373+01:00The 080 Palava: Vmobile Nigeria Launches the Electronic Voucher Distribution (EVD)The 080 Palava: Vmobile Nigeria Launches the Electronic Voucher Distribution (EVD)
The 080 Palava
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14058146.post-1127931254769622972005-09-28T19:00:00.000+01:002005-09-28T19:57:06.353+01:00Mobile Phones EtiquetteCulled from Vmobile Educational Brochure 35.

There comes a time in any technological revolution when some basic guidelines need to be set. It happened when e-mail exploded on the scene, and people started to learn some basic dos and don'ts.

There are some real abuses of the wireless technology being perpetrated all around us; and the time has come to create some social order out of the mobile phone chaos. This is by no means an exhaustive list simply because, as the technology evolves, new traits will surely emerge.

Some guidelines regarding the polite use of mobile phones would include:

1. SHOW RESPECT FOR THE PEOPLE AROUND YOU BY USING DISCRETION WHEN YOU MAKE OR TAKE CALLS IN PUBLIC.

You can also be courteous to the people with you by asking their permission to make or take a call.

2. NEVER USE A MOBILE PHONE WHILE DRIVING WITHOUT THE EAR PHONES.

Not only are both hands free to shift and steer, the earphone makes it much easier to focus on driving. Be careful to limit phone conversation while driving to traffic areas and conditions requiring low level of decision-making. In every busy traffic areas, or tricky driving situations, you could either turn the phone off or let it ring. You may also wish to pull over to the side of the road to speak if the conversation is important. Please be security conscious.

If you are a voicemail subscriber, your caller can leave a message which you can access at your convenience.

3. IF YOU NEED TO MAKE OR TAKE A CALL WHILE IN A MEETING OR AT A RESTUARANT OR THEATER; ANSWER THE CALL, ASK THE CALLER TO HOLD FOR A MOMENT, EXCUSE YOURSELF, THEN LEAVE THE ROOM.

Be aware of the fact that, depending on where you are and even who you're with, some people may view your conversation as an intrusion.

4. SWITCH YOUR PHONE TO THE SILENT AND/OR VIBRATE MODE IN PUBLIC PLACES.

Public places refer to such places as business meetings schools, worship centers, theaters or sporting events. Ideally, in some instances, turning your phone off may be the best solution. With your voicemail active, calls made to your phone while it is off would be diverted and you would still be able to listen to messages deposited by your callers ( request for Vmobile's educational brochure 7 on how to use the voicemail service). Avoid talking where you may be distracting to others. A bit of patience can move you from rude to being respected.

5. KEEP YOUR CONVERSATIONS QUIET AND BRIEF.

If you have to talk, don't scream. The cellular phone is actually more sound-and voice-sensitive than a regular phone. Just speak in a lower-than-normal voice, you will be heard by the caller.

6. FOLLOW THE RULES ABOUT MOBILE PHONE USE.

Some places, such as hospitals, petrol stations or airplanes, restrict or prohibit the use of mobile phones, so adhere to posted signs and instructions. Some jurisdiction may also restrict mobile phone use in public places. Please obey such instructions. It is better to be safe than sorry.

7. BE A GOOD SAMARITAN AND USE YOUR CELL PHONE TO HELP OTHERS BY MAKING EMERGENCY CALLS WHEN THEY ARE IN DISTRESS.

In the United Kingdom, statistics have shown than 100,000 calls a day are made to 911 and other emergency numbers by mobile phone users who report crimes and potentially life-threatening emergencies. A stitch in time can save nine.

8. AVOID TALKING WHERE OTHERS MIGHT KNOW YOUR BUSINESS.

Be aware of your surroundings as many personal and business conversations contain information that should remain confidential or private. Before using a mobile phone in a public location to discuss private business or issues, make sure that there will be enough distance to keep the content private. Some stories, some issues and some conflicts should be saved for times and locations that will allow for confidentiality.

9. NEVER USE YOUR MOBILE PHONE WHILE WALKING ON THE STREET.

You could be robbed.

10. DISCUSS MOBILE PHONE MANNERS WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY MEMBERS.

Tell them that you are practicing new mobile phone etiquette rules and offer to share them. You will discover more unwritten rules while learning from each other.

The 080 Palava
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14058146.post-1127756966870149352005-09-27T16:00:00.000+01:002005-09-27T16:05:44.446+01:00MTEL INCREASES VALIDITY WINDOWS FOR SUBSCRIBERSThe management of Nigerian Mobile Telecommunications Limited (Mtel) has approved a new validity window for its prepaid “Now Now” airtime product.

The enhanced validity window is part of the customer-centric campaign of Mtel, which places emphasis on customer satisfaction. This is noticeable in Nigerian GSM operations. A lot of services such as the 'Per second Billing; The MMS and GPRS; were said to be available only after a long time. But once such service is launched by a network, others suddenly provide same.

Some few months back, MTN Nigeria, in her effort to attracting a large subscriber base, launched the MTN400 e-pins(vouchers). It was the first of its kind and of course the most affordable in its time. Dealers and subcribers alike had a field day.

It was a windfall for the GSM dealers and a relief to the subscribers most of whom could not afford airtime on their GSM phones prior to the introduction. Although the voucher sold beyond its airtime value(there is low margin from MTN and dealers/wholsalers 'must chop'), the rate of turn-over recorded by MTN Nigeria and the GSM dealers on the MTN400 remains unbeatable. It is available in both Voucher(e-pins) and e-Charge(MTN Virtual Top Up). Other networks were not folding their arms as MTN was having a 'good day'.

Today, the networks have adopted new strategy. It is now 'Access days (validity period)extension. It may not be enough to have affordable airtime but how long the validity is.

It was MTN again. Its Validity period was extended as follows(For prepaid subscribers):

MTN400 =from 4 days, now 10 days
MTN750 =from 5 days, now 15 days
MTN1500 =from 15 days,now 30 days.

Almost immediately, Glo Mobile (the iindigenous network) came up with the a better offer!
She had her validity periods extended thus:

GLO 500 = from 5days, now 20 DAYS

GLO 1000 = from 10 days, now 45 DAYS

GLO 2000 = from 20 days, now 90 days.

The Vmobile Nigeria validity is (N500-15 days; N1000-45 days; N2,000-90 days; N5,000-180 days and N20,000-365 days).

Recently, Vmobile Nigeria came up with a new project aimed at expanding its coverage area. It is called 'ROSE' Rolling Out Service Everywhere. Subscribers are to text(send an SMS) certain codes to a destination number which stands as vote a for the nominated area. Any area with highest number of vote is swithced on within 45 days. This is a Vmobile initiative to invest 2 billion US dollars to build 3000 base stations across Nigeria connecting 10 million subscribers by March 2007 and making Nigeria a bed of roses!

The Promos:

To boost their patronage, series of promos have been the order of the day for the GSM operators. This unique initiative by MTN allows Nigerians living in the United Kingdom, to buy airtime and send to their relatives and friends in Nigeria, while MTN post-paid subscribers who are roaming abroad can also settle their bills by loading the Top-Up cards on their phones.

MTN Nigeria Top-Up Card sells for just under US$5 each. According to Olu Akanmu, MTN's General Manager, Consumer Marketing, "This strategic initiative serves a twin purpose of allowing Nigerians in the UK to buy airtime for their loved ones back home and also enables our post-paid subscribers who are roaming abroad to settle their bills by loading prepaid cards with ease via recharge-a-contract".He said the MTN Top-Up card provides a convenient alternative to sending small amounts of money home for telephone bills.

The account of the recipient is immediately credited with the airtime value loaded into the phone. He explained that people could send as many Top-Up PINs as they wish to their relatives in Nigeria.MTN has already embarked on a massive awareness campaign in the UK especially at the recently held Noting Hill carnival where the MTN Top-Up card graced the Nigerian corner as the major sponsor. Akanmu said the MTN Top-Up card has been very well received by Nigerians in the United Kingdom.

Source: Nigeria Today Online
The 080 Palava
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14058146.post-1126641786067791872005-09-13T21:01:00.000+01:002005-09-13T21:03:06.076+01:00MTN FastMail (Webmail) ServiceDo we need this?

Receiving the text, I felt is just the usual 0803 notification of a system technical problem or disclaimer (a lot of cons are out to make their living through feigned GSM services) of any kind. But I was wrong. It is an announcement of a new service: a webmail service by MTN (isn't this rare of GSM networks?).

It started as a phone to email service. It was infamous as no one could afford its 'premium' kind of tarrif. Now, gradually but surely, MTN has redirected this service to a webmail service ( gone is the 'premium' charge of N25 per action; login, logout, SMSing etc, attached to this exploitery service).

To those not too familiar with value added services provided by Nigerian GSM networks, this topic may appear very confusing. Your best bet is to go to Nigerian Forum Online for details and similarly related issues...what started as an sms to email service turned a pure webmail service overnight.. ... to be continued!

.. check back for the concluding post.
The 080 Palava
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14058146.post-1120127316062698142005-06-30T11:14:00.000+01:002005-06-30T11:28:36.066+01:00

EVERYONE IN THE 080 FAMILY HAS A STORY TO TELL.

I have heard such stories as "this...people na thief oh, I loaded N500 airtime, made a minute call and had N200 taken from my airtime..
or "I just sent one text message(sms) and have lost N100 from my airtime.." the complains are endless.

What still baffle me is the lack of such complains as: " I didnt load any airtime, now I have N500 airtime on my phone..." no, lai lai, you won't hear such fortunate (if it actually is) exclamation. Yet, all the exisitng GSM networks claim to be either " everywher you go, It's all about you, talk the talk or Glo with pride."

Experience shows that we don't have signals 'Everywhere you go' neither can we effortlessly 'talk the talk' nor does the congestion to the route of some network let us 'Glo with pride. The worst scenario is the continuous 'swicthed off' report of what is supossed to be 'All about you'.
Well..you could decide whose claim is worthy of acceptance. As far as my existence in the 080 family is concerned.. the palava lives and it's a prominent member of the family.

Now you that you are part of the palava, what palava have u to tell us?

Post comment below..pidgin english most welcome!
The 080 Palava
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com4
